Background of the Study:
In Afikpo North, indigenous knowledge has long shaped local understandings of heritage and history. The integration of folklore, ritual practices, and oral traditions plays a crucial role in interpreting archaeological data, providing a layered narrative that often complements material findings (Okoro, 2023). Recent studies have emphasized the value of indigenous epistemologies in reconstructing past lifeways, thereby challenging conventional archaeological paradigms (Nnamdi, 2024). The region’s rich cultural tapestry, passed down through generations, offers vital clues to settlement patterns, resource management, and spiritual beliefs (Amadi, 2025). Moreover, interdisciplinary approaches combining ethnography with stratigraphic analysis have revealed new dimensions of local history. The importance of such integrated methodologies is increasingly recognized as essential to develop culturally resonant heritage management practices. This research, therefore, aims to systematically assess how indigenous knowledge influences archaeological interpretations, ultimately enriching the academic discourse and enhancing community participation in heritage preservation (Okafor, 2023).
Statement of the Problem:
Despite growing evidence of the benefits of incorporating indigenous knowledge in archaeological research, its influence in Afikpo North remains inadequately examined. Conventional archaeological methods often overlook the contextual nuances provided by local narratives, leading to fragmented interpretations. This gap results in incomplete understandings of the cultural heritage and historical identity of the region. Addressing these deficiencies is critical for developing inclusive research frameworks that effectively integrate both scientific and traditional insights (Ude, 2024; Nwosu, 2025).

Significance of the Study:
This research highlights the critical role of indigenous knowledge in archaeology, offering a model for integrating traditional insights with modern methodologies. The outcomes will benefit local communities, cultural institutions, and academic researchers by promoting a more inclusive and contextualized understanding of heritage (Chukwu, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to indigenous knowledge influences on archaeological interpretation in Afikpo North Local Government Area, Ebonyi State. Data will be drawn primarily from ethnographic interviews and archaeological records. Limitations include potential variability in oral histories and access constraints to some local sites.
